How to write a cover letter that fits the job

A cover letter answers one question your CV cannot: why this job, and why you. It does not repeat your CV — it picks the two or three things that matter most for this role and explains them. Some employers ask for a letter and some make it optional; a short, specific one rarely hurts.

The structure

  1. Greeting: address a named person if you can find one. Otherwise, "Dear Hiring Manager" works.
  2. Opening: name the role, where you saw it, and give one sentence on why you are a strong fit.
  3. Evidence: one or two short paragraphs with specific achievements that match the job's main requirements.
  4. Close: say you would welcome an interview, thank the reader, and sign with your name and contact details.

Length

Stay within one page — roughly 250 to 400 words. Recruiters read many letters, and a focused one is easier to remember.

Tone in English

English cover letters are usually direct. Open with the role and your strongest qualification, keep the paragraphs short, and end with a clear next step. "Yours sincerely" fits a letter to a named reader; "Kind regards" is a common modern close.

A short example

Dear [Name],

I am applying for the [Job title] role at [Company], advertised on [where you saw it]. In my current role at [Employer], I [a specific achievement that matches the job].

I would welcome the chance to discuss how I could help [Company] with [a need from the job posting]. Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the same letter to every employer.
  • Repeating your CV line by line.
  • Writing about what you want instead of what you offer.
  • Getting the company's name or the job title wrong.
  • Spelling and grammar mistakes — read the letter aloud before you send it.
